We Interrupt This Post

Ouch. Perpetual is putting GnH on indefinite hold. That’s never good. What this actually means is that the game will likely never be finished. Like Tobold, I was in the beta, and as he says, I’m assuming the NDA is now gone. If it isn’t I guess they’ll have to kick me out of the-oooohhh. Too soon?
Alright, let’s try to be serious for a moment here though. What did I actually think of the game?
I’ll admit, I didn’t play it a lot of time, I played it enough to see some of what it had to offer, but being in several other betas it didn’t get my full attention. That having been said, I guess any sort of press for Perpetual is better than no press at this point. For one thing, the game wasn’t revolutionary, or, for that matter, really even evolutionary. It was still a fairly fun game though. It did need polish. They were very right about that. It also seemed, for lack of a better term “clunky” to me. My connection was always good, and my frame-rates excellent but the animations looked and felt a bit more like LotRO. That isn’t a good thing. Whereas quite a few other games, including WoW and EQ2 let you hit a button and start getting feedback on screen this game just felt like it wanted me to wait until it was ready to do every painstakingly slow action. I think that was my biggest problem with the game, and unfortunately it was a very big detraction from the enjoyment I otherwise would have had.
Was it ready for release? Probably not, but I think they still could have gotten away with pushing it out the door. I think the fact that they would rather sit on millions of dollars invested into a project rather than release something that wasn’t great though speaks volumes about the company. We’ll have to see how it all works out.
