Striving for Mediocrity

by

Normally I’m not one to participate in contests, but for this one, I make an exception. I’d like to state that this post idea is inspired by the Problogger.net Group Writing Project. Problogger.net, in general is a great resource and this community involvement aspect is one reason why I am addicted to reading it.

Back to the topic at hand though.

I thought I would take the time, with the year coming to an end, to look back at how things went for the MMO genre in 2006 as well as for GamingMMO.com in the time we’ve been up.

So, what did happen this year? I can honestly say I don’t know. I can tell you that plenty of great stuff was launched (you know, games and such, we aren’t counting this blog, though it is great eh?) Guild Wars: Nightfall for one. With GW now boasting over three million players it is obvious they are doing something right, and I think Nightfall is perhaps one of the best examples of this. Aside from that I was, mainly because of my work with this blog, introduced to such gems as the various GPotato games. If you haven’t seen them already, I’ve done some talking about them.

Now, to say that 2006 was a great year for MMOs is, I think, a bit over the top. I mean, we won’t see the brilliance that is The Burning Crusade, until next year, and my personal pick for most wanted game; Tabula Rasa.

There were plenty of disappointments this year, chief among them Blizzard pushing the Burning Crusade release date back a bit. Of course, this was expected, I mean this is, after all, Blizzard. They look at deadlines in much the same was as anorexics look at cake. It was still disappointing, though perhaps not as disappointing as what they tried to pawn off as a completed patch with 2.0, a rant left for another time and place (and one that has been seen in several other articles already).

But, what about this blog? I can honestly say that I feel “meh” about what has been done so far. Don’t get me wrong, there were some shining moments for me, my personal picks being a couple of choice Editorials (read: rants) that I found especially fun to write. So, instead of looking back on this blog and the time it got to exist in 2006 I wanted to look ahead to 2007. I say with complete conviction at this second, that I plan on some great new content for 2007, and more of it than has been seen up to this point. I tried for some interviews in ‘06, but folks weren’t so big on getting back to me with the answers (though I did get an interesting response about my questions, one which stated something along the lines of my questions being “too hard” (this can be read as saying “you didn’t flatter us with your questions so we will refuse to respond)).

So, here’s looking forward to next year!
