Server Maintenance

No one likes it but we can all probably agree that it is necessary at some point to keep things running smoothly (in the not to distant past playing WoW on a Monday night was painful because of how bad the servers were running at that point, of course, since they upgraded servers this hasn’t been an issue). But, what is the best way to go about doing it? Should there be a weekly maintenance period at a given point every week, no matter the circumstances (that is, even if a holiday or some other reason a lot of people would be able to play falls on that day) or should it vary on the basis of need only? Would it be better to do a short maintenance period every day (or every few days) only cutting 30-60 minutes of play time or do you prefer losing a large chunk of time and but knowing about it?
If you were running things, what would you do?
Honestly I can say I’m not sure, I know what I would want to do, if it was feasible, I would probably try to keep the game running constantly but run the game with double (or near so) the servers and just change out every week or so during maintenance. This obviously comes with it’s own problems, and it would require the right set up to be able to be done, but if it was executed properly this could limit downtimes if not completely eliminate them. All I know for sure is I keep seeing all these extended maintenance announcements popping up each week and it is frustrating.
