Console vs. PC Gaming

by

pcvsconsole.jpgThe MMO genre is for the most part a PC gaming genre, which is why I wanted to bring attention to a post from XBox 360 Rally about why console gaming is better than PC gaming.

To be perfectly honest, I disagree on very few points. Okay, number 3 is stretching a bit, you can get a comfortable chair to sit at for not very much money (the one I’m sitting on now cost me about $50 at Ikea (possibly the greatest place to buy furniture known to man.)

However, he is absolutely right on number 1, installation is a pain, and always will be. The advantage used to be that PC’s had a hard drive so you didn’t need a memory card, but with consoles now having hard drives of their own, that advantage is pretty much non-existent.

On point number 2 there could be some disagreement but for what he is saying, he is correct. When you buy an XBox, you are buying a Microsoft product, and any games that are going to come out have to keep to the standards Microsoft has set for development including any online modes. In PC games you are stuck with different set-ups for everyone.

This is slightly offset by multiple games being produced by one company (think NCSoft) which often share, or at least can share, various parts to keep things streamlined (the new PlayNC launcher for instance).

I take point number 5 on two different levels, and one of them is good for the PC. I play MMO games almost exclusively. I also like RTSes on occasion and I am glad that the PC is the one with the majority of these titles on it. That said, for most other games I’d rather play on the console (racing games, fighting games, etc.) Of course, first person shooters could go either way depending on who you talk to but I’ll leave that up for you guys to decide.

We’ll touch on point 6 later ;)

All in all a good read and definitely some very true things in there.
