How ‘Bout that Session Play

Friday, July 6th, 2007

If you haven’t heard about Session Play in LotRO I suggest you check it out. Basically it boils down to this, you get to play through the eyes of some(one/thing) else. It’s actually an interesting idea and sounds like it could be fun to me. I do see where some people are coming from though. Playing as a chicken isn’t exactly what people probably had in mind when they envisioned the next content update and what it would have in it. I mean, nothing in my time spent playing MMOs has ever made me say “I wonder what it would be like to play as random critter X.”

Still, I don’t see how people can really fault Turbine too much, I don’t think session play is the only addition to the game, just something they thought would be worth highlighting. LotRO looks like it is trying to establish itself as a casual-friendly MMO, with plenty of stuff to do for those who aren’t at max level as well as those who are. That’s not a bad thing. And, if nothing else, at least with Turbine you always know they are working on updating their game as they give plenty of information. The same can’t be said of everyone else.

I Don’t Want to, But I Must

Monday, May 14th, 2007

So I’m thinking about picking up LOTRO. My comments about it previously haven’t been fantastic but that wasn’t ever because the game was bad. I don’t recall ever saying that. My problem was it was WoW with a new package. Well…it seems I may have been too hasty. Having talked and read various people’s comments apparently there is a lot of really good game in there stuffed between the WoW wrapping.

And, since I’ll be getting my new computer soon I should be able to run it much better than on my laptop (which I think is why I had such a major problem with it before.) We’ll see how things work out…I have a bunch of store credit on my EB Games/Gamestop card so the game will be all but free when I do pick it up (minus the subscription fee after a month) which will be nice.

I’ll post the specs of my new computer this week as well. I like it and am happy with the price as well.

Getting that Feeling

So…LOTRO launched today. Cue excitement and music and general fanfare…OK, I can’t muster it. I’m sorry. I can’t pretend that this is great news or…for that matter…even news that I care about.

I played it. I was, shall we say, under-impressed. It wasn’t that good. It wasn’t bad, of course, but it wasn’t good. It…exists. I must be playing a different game or something than all these other bloggers I’ve been hearing from because all I hear is constant praise for a mediocre game. Is that what we are reduced to? Praising games that are ho-hum because there hasn’t been an actual decent release in, well, a while? I hope not.

I do like the payment structure that was offered to people that pre-ordered. I think all games should do something like that. But…um…that’s about the most interesting thing I found. Sorry.

I guess I’m just stuck waiting with WoW for a while longer to get my MMO fix.

Enjoy Tolkien fans.
