Prepare Yourselves

Friday, October 5th, 2007

So very long ago now, it seems, I wrote a review of a certain product. I use this product all the time and it is probably the single best purchase I have ever made for gaming. It is still holding up very well, and works out great but the product itself (not necessarily mine) is getting a bit old. But don’t worry, that’s okay, because there’s a big announcement that most people probably never saw.

I Hate Money

Which is why I’m willing to spend $30 on a mouse pad. This mouse pad to be exact.

I’ll probably get to writing up a full review in about a week or so after I’ve given it a bit of play time. From the few hours I spent with it last night though, it is definitely comfortable and my mouse glides over it quite nicely. Let’s see how it does under some heavy gaming this weekend though.

My New Computer

Monday, May 14th, 2007

So, as promised, here’s my new computer’s specs (or at least the important ones):

  • Power Supply: 750 Watt — Thermaltake Toughpower W0117RU Power Supply
  • Processor: AMD AthlonT64 X2 5600+ Dual-Core CPU (2.8 GHz)
  • Memory: 2048MB [1024MB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX 768MB (I can’t wait to see how this thing runs)
  • Hard Drive 1&2: 200 GB 7200 RPM
  • Monitor: LCD Monitor ViewSonic 19″ Wide (could have gone bigger but I don’t see much need. I take a very minimalist approach to the UI’s I use in game so having a ton of screen space isn’t a necessity (not that 19″ isn’t a good amount anyway))
  • Keyboard: Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (I was really stuck on this option. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to get here as I don’t really need macro keys/gaming keys but this keyboard got the best reviews consistently so I decided to go with it anyway, even though it cost me a few extra dollars)
  • Mouse: Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse (obviously)
  • Operating System: MS Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition (eventually I will upgrade to Vista, but I see no reason to start off using it when there are simply too many problems with it still.)
  • Random Extras: 12-In-1 Internal Flash Media Card Reader/Writer Black
    Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps PCI Adapter
Free Games - [Age of Empires III] and [Rise Of Nations: Rise Of Legend] (who doesn’t love some free games)

So, there you have it. If you are interested in any other components I chose let me know and I’ll put them up. You may be noticing I didn’t put a sound card up. That’s because I went with the onboard sound since I can get the card I want cheaper at NewEgg than I can buying it with the computer. Since installation is so simple I’ll take the time and do it myself.

Got my G5

Friday, May 11th, 2007

I just got my mouse and tried it out for a few minutes (I won’t be using it a ton until I get my new computer to put it into. Anyway, I’m liking it a lot so far. I took some time and added some extra DPI pre-sets. The 2000 I’m sure will be nice for (some) games but for general browsing it is a bit too sensitive. I’ve found that I prefer between 1000 and 1600 DPI for everyday use.

The 800 DPI setting that a lot of reviewers mentioned as good for “everyday” use I found to feel very slow, the 400 is especially slow (obviously) but could be great for some applications (Photoshop for one.) I also love the cord on it and the weights. I’ll talk about those after I’ve spent more time with it though. Oh yeah, and the “back” button on the side is a great touch.

Getting a New Mouse

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007
logitechg5.jpg

Soon I’ll be getting a new computer. Today though, I ordered a brand new mouse. The Logitech G5 to be precise. I could have gone with the newer G7 model but, quite frankly, the cord doesn’t bother me in the least. Originally I was going to wait and just get the mouse with my computer. Then I saw that I could actually get it cheaper (by about $15) if I bought it off Amazon separately. Now, I’ll be honest, this isn’t a ton of money that I saved but what’s important is that I saved money at all. Why spend more than I have to, right?

Anyway, I’ll be updating at a later date after I’ve gotten it and had plenty of time to test it out with different games. I’ll write up a full review then.

If I don’t like it (which I don’t think will be the case) then I may check out some other offerings from the gaming mouse set. I’ll post my final new computer specs after I make the purchase too.

Gaming Mice (Mouses?)

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007
gamingmouse.jpg

Since I’m going to be getting a new computer soon I’ve been looking at various accessories I want to grab with it. I’m stuck on the mouse. I already have a great gaming pad (the n52) and am not really looking for a gaming keyboard because of it, but I am looking for a good gaming mouse.

I’ve been looking at the Logitech MX518 or the Creative Labs Fatal1ty 1010. There’s also the Razor Diamondback that I could get or there is, of course, the R2 Gaming Mouse to check out as well. Have I missed any good ones? Let me know.

Anyone have any suggestions? I don’t really know what I should be going after.

A Step Beyond

Monday, January 15th, 2007

b0000dc64301_aa280_sclzzzzzzz_v40404106_.jpgI’ve had it for a while and I think it’s now safe to put up a full review of the Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52.

Let’s start off by assuming you haven’t already gone out and bought one. If that’s the case, stop reading at this point and head on over to Amazon.com to buy it.

I mean it. If you feel like spending an extra fourty dollars pick yourself up the Logitech G15 gaming Keyboard. Or, if you prefer, light your money on fire and use it to burn down your house.

I’m not saying the G15 isn’t a good product, from everything I’ve heard it’s excellent. I just see no reason to buy it, especially for MMOs. I own a keyboard. It’s probably safe to say everyone who has a computer already owns a keyboard. I don’t need another one for my gaming. What I need is something compact to make me not have to stretch my hands out all over and switch back and forth between keyboard and mouse. That’s what the n52 does, and it does it well.

I can’t even imagine PvPing without having it. From the first time I used it I noticed how much easier it was to get to everything, and it only required one hand, leaving my other hand always free for the mouse. This makes a big difference in speed (thus why it’s called the Speedpad, eh?)

It comes with some software to install that is used to configure the keys on it. The software is fairly easy to use for basic settings (which is mostly what is needed for playing an MMO) but is still powerful enough to give the option of setting up some really cool stuff. It took me maybe 30-45 minutes to set everything up and test it out a bit until I got it perfect to how I wanted it.

Of course, the important part isn’t so much the software as the hardware, and I must say, it’s a steal on Amazon at approximately $30. It’s small, which is nice, especially if, like me, you don’t have a huge amount of desk space. It’s also pretty solid and holds in place well, even during some of the more frantically paced moments of the games I played.

It’s also incredibly ergonomic. It fits the hand nicely, allowing everything to be within one fingers reach without much stretching at all (the “1″ key and the “5″ key are the longest distance you will have to move any of your fingers, and that is hardly a stretch).

I will admit, it’s not quite perfect, but it is close, and if there is one complaint to make, and it is small, it is that the keys sometimes are a bit tough. That’s not all bad, as it means it is built for some decent amount of wear and tear, but at times I will have to repress a key because I didn’t quite hit it hard enough the first time, this happens pretty rarely, but it can be an annoyance when it does.

Overall there should be no reason that you don’t already have this, it’s well worth the money you’ll put into it and more and will probably increase your action and reaction time in any game.
